Debt Management
Debt Consolidation Loan Providers: Find the Right Fit
The right consolidation lender offers a lower all-in cost than your current debts, transparent fees, a soft-check prequalification, and the option to pay creditors directly. This page explains how to compare providers yourself; we do not lend money or rank lenders we have not independently reviewed.

Types of providers
| Provider type | What to know |
|---|---|
| Banks | May offer relationship discounts to existing customers; approval standards can be stricter |
| Credit unions | Member-owned; federal credit unions are subject to an interest-rate cap set by their regulator, and many offer competitive rates |
| Online lenders | Fast applications and decisions; rates and fees vary widely |
| Nonprofit credit counselors | Don't lend money, but can set up a debt management plan with your card issuers |
What to compare
- APR — includes interest and most fees, so it's the best single number for comparison.
- Origination fee — and whether it's deducted from the amount you receive.
- Term length — shorter terms mean higher payments but less total interest.
- Total cost of the loan — monthly payment × number of payments, plus any fees.
- Direct payment to creditors — some lenders pay your old debts for you, which removes temptation.
- Prepayment penalties — you should be able to pay early without a fee.
- Customer support and hardship options — what happens if you hit a rough patch?

Red flags
- Guaranteed approval "regardless of credit."
- Fees requested before any loan is issued.
- Pressure to decide immediately.
- A lender that isn't registered in your state. You can check with your state's financial regulator.
- Confusing "debt relief" or settlement offers presented as loans.
Checklist before you apply
- Check your credit reports for errors at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Calculate your current average APR and total monthly payments.
- Prequalify with several lenders using soft inquiries where possible.
- Compare APRs and total cost, not just monthly payments.
- Make a written plan to avoid new balances on paid-off cards.
Our approach to provider listings
SmartPath Finance may in future feature specific lenders, which may include affiliate partners. Any listing will state its selection criteria, disclose commercial relationships, and be reviewed against the factors above. We will never present a lender as "best" without explaining why.
